The Noah Webster House’s signature fundraiser, Webster's War of the Words, is back! After a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19, we are delighted to again be presenting this smart and funny word-based game show hosted by Merriam-Webster Dictionary's Editor at Large, Peter Sokolowski.
One benefit of hosting a virtual event is that our contestants (and guests) can join us from across the country! This year, we have quite an impressive line-up of contestants from all over North America. On the Blue Team, returning guest Ben Zimmer, linguist, lexicographer, and language columnist for The Wall Street Journal will join forces with Dr. Nicole Holliday, Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania, and Will Shortz, New York Times Crossword Puzzle Editor & NPR Puzzlemaster. Mignon Fogarty, founder of the Quick and Dirty Tips network and creator of Grammar Girl, will work with fellow West Coaster David Kwong, magician, writer, producer, and New York Times crossword puzzle constructor, and Canadian linguist Gretchen McCulloch, resident linguist at WIRED and co-creator of the podcast Lingthusiasm, on the Red Team.
